Artist of the Month: David Schwarz
As spring settles upon us with hopeful whispers of the coming summer, we bring to you an artist whose work is just as reflective and mystifying as the summer sun growing hotter every day. The luminescent glass sculptures of David Schwarz were described by the New York Times as “light-catching vessels that hover like flying saucers inviting close inspection.”
Schwarz’ one-of-a-kind artworks are crafted from portions of clear glass overlaid with colored parts. Through intricate layering of different colored etchings and pieces of glass, the unique shapes create beautiful illusions of perspective and contrast. Some have described his works as “mini-worlds,” in the sense that their circular shapes incorporate various aspects of light, scale, and architectural perfection to create a feeling of depth, movement, and reflection. His most famous “Z-Axis” series is meant to “create an illusion of space,” and it does so with magnificent beauty. This is certainly why Schwarz is now considered one of the top glass blowers in the United States.
David Schwarz is a pioneer in his field. He was educated at Clark College and Central Washington University in Washington and continued on as a Staff Member at Pilchuck Glass School. After receiving his Masters of Science/Glass from Illinois State University he studied with Joel Phillip Meyers, an influential figure in the studio glass movement. Over the span of 25 years, he has mastered the ability of capturing his viewers attention and enticing them to take a closer look. His globe-like forms, balancing on eerie black branches of glass, are unlike any other art forms seen in the industry. His works can be found across the world, from The White House Permanent Collection and Corning Museum of Glass to numerous private collections and corporations.
